The site is located in Lexington, KY and was historically utilized as a gasoline filling station before development as a bookstore in the 1950s. Shield worked in conjunction with the UK Environmental Management Department to perform a comprehensive Site Characterization to delineate source contamination area, conduct a hazardous material survey prior to demolition, and to develop a Property Management Plan for participation in Kentucky’s Brownfield Redevelopment Program to obtain liability protection for the discovered environmental concerns. The Plan included implementation of Voluntary Corrective Action and approved by Kentucky’s Department for Environmental Protection (KDEP).

On behalf of UK and the property developer, Shield developed a Voluntary Corrective plan to address subsurface environmental and indoor air vapor intrusion concerns. The KDEP agreed that the implemented Plan would create a safe reuse of the property while controlling the discovered environmental impacts. UK was issued a Letter of Concurrence from KDEP protecting them from historical liabilities associated with the historic use of the site. All work was performed on time and within the approved project budget.
